When you first start playing CastleVille, your Kingdom is very small and while you’ll have ample space and resources to get started, you’ll soon discover that you’ll need to grow your kingdom quickly. The way to expand is by exploring the surrounding areas. In fact, in the first few quests, you’ll almost immediately be expanding your Kingdom’s borders through exploration. Read on for some CastleVille Exploration cheats, strategies and tips.
Gloom
Most of the land surrounding your kingdom is covered in Gloom, a strange and mysterious force sent forth by a figure in the game known only as the Dark One. The Gloom envelops much of the land, causing sadness and despair, and your central objective in the game is to restore happiness to the land by pushing back the Gloom. You do this through exploration.
Exploring the Gloom in CastleVille
You’ll immediately see that all of the areas adjacent to your starting area are covered in darkness. This is the Gloom. With enough resources, you can explore these areas one at a time, and add them to your kingdom. Generally, you’ll need sufficient Castle Levels, Coins and Exploration Crystals to explore a particular area. The amount varies substantially by zone, and picking the right order for exploration is crucial to your success.
First Explorations
Your first few explorations are largely guided by the game’s storyline and initial quests. The first zone you explore will be the one directly to the Southeast, where you’ll see the silhouette of Raphael. Afterwards, you’ll get another series of quests to rescue the wizard Alastair from the Gloom, and you’ll explore a few zones in order to reach him. After that, you’re able to explore in any direction you choose.
Crafting for Crystals
Each zone requires a certain amount of resources to explore, and one in particular takes a fair amount of effort to produce: Exploration Crystals. These are crafted in your Workshop, and are assembled using crystal shards, which you receive from your neighbors and friends, as well as by banishing beasties that appear in your kingdom. It helps to maintain a steady stream of crystal shards and to keep your Workshops busy with producing the Exploration Crystals (it takes 3 shards to form a crystal and 1.5 hours to do so in your Workshop). The easiest way to obtain the shards is to keep asking your friends to send them to you.
Long-Term Strategy
After the initial quests, you have a lot of choices about where to explore. In general, you should explore in the direction of where you see silhouettes of people standing in the Gloom. These are special characters, like Yvette, Raphael and Alastair. When you rescue them from the Gloom, they will join your Kingdom and provide new and entertaining quests.
